Is There A Cure For Obesity?

Causes of Morbid Obesity

If you are one of the people classified as morbidly obese, it would be better for your health in the long run if you acknowledge that you have a serious problem, and start doing something about it.

A person is morbidly obese when he or she weighs 20% or more above ideal body weight, or 100 pounds or more above ideal body weight. Morbid obesity is also called clinically severe obesity. It is a serious condition, with dire consequences to your health and wellbeing.

The two most important factors contributing to morbid obesity is an excessive intake of calories and a sedentary lifestyle. Other factors that could contribute towards morbid obesity are pre-existing health conditions and a genetic disposition towards obesity. These conditions are however rare.

Other Causes of Morbid Obesity

An underactive thyroid may slow the metabolism down to such an extent that it could cause morbid obesity. Eating disorders or metabolic disorders could also cause morbid obesity. These conditions should be treated before attempting to loose weight. Consult a physician if you suspect that you are suffering from one of these conditions.

A person becomes morbidly obese by taking in too many calories, mostly in the form of fattening junk food; deep fried and sugar laden food and drinks that contribute nothing or little to the nourishment of the body, and everything to the accumulation of fat on the body. Our bodies are overfed and undernourished.

Pregnancy and Morbid Obesity

It is often difficult for a morbidly obese woman to fall pregnant, and there are many health risks associated with pregnancy for a morbidly obese woman.

Treatment of Morbid Obesity

To loose weight, an emphasis should be placed on choosing food that is essential to the body. These include fresh fruit and vegetables, lean proteins, whole wheat cereals and dairy products. Fried and sugary snacks and processed foods should be avoided as far as possible.

Our lifestyles in the Western world today do not include exercise by default. We have to make an effort to get enough physical activities into our lifestyles to maintain a healthy body. Exercise has many health benefits. It stimulates the body’s metabolism to burn more calories for fuel, thereby burning excess fat as well. It also tones and stretches the muscles to make the body more efficient in energy consumption. A muscular body burns more calories than a flabby body.
