Children grow up in an information era today, and it can be both a blessing and a curse. Instead of spending time outdoors and being active in
playing games and thereby burning off calories, children are drawn to computers and online entertainment.
One of the consequences of this sedentary lifestyle and lack of daily physical activity is child obesity. Parents need to take steps to solve
this problem and find solutions, in order to prevent these children from becoming obese adults, and raising obese children in their turn.
Causes And Treatment
Childhood obesity is caused by the same factors that cause adult obesity: unhealthy eating habits and lack of exercise. Children sitting in
front of the computer or playstation do not get enough exercise to burn off the calories they consume. Fattening, unhealthy snacks are usually
available, causing the child to consume even more calories. Some children have a genetic disposition towards obesity, or hormonal
disorders, but such cases are rare.
Parents wanting ton do something to help with their child obesity should consult a physician about the obesity causes before embarking on
any weight loss plan, to eliminate possible problems to the child’s health. The physician may be able to recommend a healthy eating plan as well
as an exercise plan appropriate to the age and size of the child.
Fixing a child’s bad eating habits starts with fixing the whole family’s bad eating habits. Parents should control what foods and snacks are
kept in the house, and make sure that only healthy, nourishing foods are available. The whole family should be involved in the choice and
preparation of wholesome, fresh, low-fat yet tasty meals high in nutrients essential to everybody’s wellbeing.
A culture of exercise should be introduced to all family members, from the eldest to the youngest. Look out for a physical activity that is
appropriate for your child’s age. Play in the park with a ball or go rollerblading or cycling over weekends. Encourage your child to participate
in sports at school, and be there to cheer him on.
Child obesity can be overcome by following these simple guidelines: make healthy food choices as a family, and get moving to burn off those
extra calories.
