Morbid obesity is a condition of being overweight to such an extent that it seriously affects the person’s health and
wellbeing, also increasing health risks such as diabetes and hypertension, and experiencing a general feeling of tiredness and
depression.
Treatment for morbid obesity can only begin once the person suffering from it acknowledges that he or she is morbidly obese and then take
responsibility for it.
A person is defined as morbidly obese by the American National Institute of Health when his weight is 20% or more above his ideal body weight.
A person is also considered to be morbidly obese when his weight is more than 100 pounds above his ideal body weight.
Why Is Morbid Obesity So Prevalent?
A lot of people in the Western world are prone to morbid obesity, as we consume the unhealthy food and drinks advertised on the TV, instead of
eating what our bodies require, namely fresh fruit and vegetables, lean protein, dairy products and drinking pure, fresh water. Fried foods of
any kind should be avoided, as well as sugary snacks. We need to start choosing what is good for our bodies, instead of what satisfies our taste
buds.
Another reason why we are so obese is because we sit in the car on the way to work, sit in front of the computer at work, and sit in front of
the TV at home, Exercise has no part in our lives any more, unless we make an effort to get some kind of physical activity in our lives. Exercise
is essential in the treatment of morbid obesity.

To start treating morbid obesity, there are a few options available. It is important to note that starvation diets and unbalanced eating
programs do not work. They lead to yo-yo dieting, and more weight is gained over the long term than lost over the short term.
If you are serious about losing weight and getting your health back, you will have to consider a few lifestyle changes. The weight is not
going to fall off overnight, as it was not gained overnight either, but with perseverance and a positive attitude you will succeed.
The most important lifestyle change is in selecting what you eat. It is important to nourish your body with food from the five food groups,
instead of filling it with fatty, sugary foods that only provide empty calories that get stored as excess weight.
Exercise is imperative to maintain a fit, healthy body. It increases the metabolism, which leads to fat being burned for energy. It also
creates a mood lift, and a general feeling of wellbeing. Start exercising slowly. Your body may not be used to it anymore and your muscles will
be sore and stiff in the beginning. A half an hour’s walking a day will do wonders to get your body moving and on the road to normal weight.
Water is a very important part of maintaining a healthy body. It keeps the metabolic processes going, and helps to flush out toxins
accumulated over the years by incorrect eating. An adult should drink at least six to eight glasses of pure water a day.
So if you are morbidly obese, start by doing something about it. Change the way you look at food and exercise. They are there for your
benefit, and should be used as such.
